FDA UK Distribution Guide and Questions on Film Distribution

What is meant by the term film distribution?Film distribution is the process that a film goes through to reach it's target audience, done by the film distributer. The distribution of a film is made available to watch by a film distributor. This can be accomplished in various different ways; interviews; theatrical release; posters; a home entertainment release  i.e. DVD/ Blu-Ray; flyers; a television programme for broadcast syndication and could include digital distribution through social media too.

What does a film distributor do?A film distributor is a company/individual responsible for the marketing of a movie. The distributor can set the release date of the film, and within the time of release can promote the film increasing the marketing value. The distributor can do this directly through vertical integration using other forms of media to publicise the film. Depending on the size of the distributor more/less conventions can be used the larger/smaller the distributor. Over all, the distributor identifies its target audience; why the audience would go and see it; and the revenue stream potential; developing plans and partnerships to promote awareness of the film. Simply, the distributor just tried to get the biggest audience possible to view the film. This all depends on the demographics and psychographics.

How does reach relate to film distribution?
Reach is the total amount of people that are exposed to the film in a certain amount of time. Moreover, the greater the amount of platforms that you use, the greater the population, that will be exposed to your product. Therefore, reach also relates to how you target the population too. However the more you advertise, the more it costs.

What is meant by the marketing plan?
A marketing plan is a strategy outlining all of an organisation's  marketing ideas/efforts
. This can be effected by many different factors: word of mouth, posters, trailers, magazines, radio, mobile, social networking, fan base, publicity, promotional partnerships, mercenaries, red carpet events, festivals, cinema.
What is meant by the distribution plan?
This is the method of getting the product to the consumer. it all depends on what the audience want, how to beat competition, the peak time to supply to the consumer, satisfying demand and  budgeting.

What is the difference between advertising, publicity and promotion?
These three things are all considered when trying to get the largest audience to watch the film as possible. yet, all of the m play a slightly different part in attracting a greater audience. Advertising is all about grabbing the audiences attention and hooking them into the product, creating a 'hungry' effect. publicity is where you just try to remind and make aware the largest volume of people as possible, so they know as much information as possible, to the greatest population. This is all done by the media though, through interviews, reviews, etc. and is not controlled by the creators. this may not work out positively in relation to publicity but either way it will gather the attention of a larger population. promotion is  gathering an even larger population, usually providing offers that lure even more people via 'saving' money, and attracts the audience furthermore. All three persuade the audience to watch the film in three subtly different ways.

Find a teaser poster, teaser trailer, main poster and main trailer for a horror film and put them on your Blog – who was the distributor and in how many countries was it released? Can you find how many screens it was shown in on the opening weekend?
The Blair Witch Project was distributed by Artisan Entertainment (whose successors became Lionsgate entertainment). It went on to make $249 million gross profit, worldwide. This led to the film being one of the best independently created of all time. This is incredible seeing as the budget was between $500,000-$750,000, depending on sources. Intelligently, the film distributors used the internet to spread the rumour that the film was actually real and created a lot of attention from both the public and media, worldwide. It was released in 34 countries worldwide it took just 8 days to shoot. It took 8 months to edit though. It is classed as one of the most pirated films ever, because of it's limited release due to being independent, it wasn't till it's online rumours made it so famous leading to the worldwide release to horror fanatics.
